How to Jump Start Another Car

Once your battery dies, you may think that it’s a goner. However, you may be in luck if you have a set of jumper cables. If you can safely use the jump-start method to charge up your battery, you can probably get back on the road in no time. However, jump-starting is not a cure-all for a dead battery. It’s time to get a replacement as soon as possible to avoid getting stuck on the side of the road.

Jump-starting a car is fairly easy and only requires two things. You need a set of jumper cables with red and black clips, as well as a second car with a working battery. The goal is to connect your dead battery to the working battery, allowing it to charge up your battery until you can start your engine. Note: Both cars should be turned off before you begin a jump-start.

Once your cars are parked and turned off, you can attach the jumper cables starting with the red clips. These red clips attach to the positive terminals on the car batteries. These should be attached first, one to each car battery’s positive terminal. Then, you can follow suit with the black clips and negative terminals. Once finished, the second car may be turned on. The working battery should begin to charge your dead battery right away. After 20 minutes, you’re good to get back on the road.
